Yes. The Ku Klux Klan was at the height of its power in the 1920s, and Maryland and its State College were by no means immune from and, quite obviously, embraced the systemic hatred and fear embodied in the use of Klan robes. One has to imagine that many members of the Maryland State College/University of Maryland community, including students and faculty, will have been among the estimated 25,000 marchers in Klan regalia down Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, DC just a few years later on August 8, 1925. It is in this environment, this air, of racism-without-fear-or-shame that members of the Dory family, other Lakelanders, and African Americans from other Black communities near the campus daily worked. University Archives retain photographs of such celebrations including maypole dances, diaphanous costumes reminiscent of Roman antiquity, and the awarding of the “May Queen” title with a triumphal march from the Main Administration Building. Other activities, such as those shown here–“Southern ‘fried’”–reflect the disparaging realities that align with such celebrations in a school just south of the Mason-Dixon line. While the UMD community may not have known about it then or now, it caused a huge disruption for black lakelanders. Using their voice and autonomy, the Lakeland resisted the displacement vehemently and took every effort to maintain ownership of their community. While this photo holds the faces of young men in 1969, the year it appeared in the student yearbook. It also highlights the way these ideals stick with us regardless of where we go. We often use youth, humor, and time as a way to excuse racism, but this photo forces us to face our history and the violence it promoted. In other words, you are looking at future lawmakers, educators, and everyday people who uphold and support racist systems of belief. It can’t be excused or ignored.
