Violetta Sharps, Miss Lakeland 1963, greets the crowd during that year’s Elks Day Parade (upper left of left page). Among the groups marching that day was Lakeland’s own majorettes. This parade was one of many that took place over the years in the Lakeland community. The Elks’ parades promoted healthy competition between lodges throughout the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. Captured in the photo below (lower right of left page), marching down Lakeland Road, is one of several marching bands invited to participate.

"Oh, the University of Maryland played an integral part in the jobs that my family had the most of my family was on the grounds crew. And that's what kept Maryland looking as pristine as it was. And I can remember the jobs that they had. They took great pride in those jobs. And if it wasn't done right, when they became supervisors and whatnot, they would go back and have it redone you know all over again until it looked pristine. So it was no halfway doing your job. They did everything from running heavy equipment, to the lightest of equipment to keep that campus looking the way that it looked. The big M that was there was the idea of my stepdad. Because when my dad died Oh Um excuse me, when my dad died, that was my stepdads notion to put the big M there. And it became one of his products and Georgeson. His name's James Adams. He had an integral part in Lakeland, because he was president of the senior authority of the Lakeland Civic Association. And he took great pride in that. And as it ended up, they had trees planted all throughout Lakeland that were dedicated to him. There was a park in Lakeland that was dedicated to him. "

" I worked in high energy physics. And we were the next generation that came along that was not doing manual labor, like sweeping mopping, the yard crew, or whatever. And high energy physics was an area that we had to learn how to read film. And this film was taking pictures of the bombardment of atoms in their high energy physics lab, because it was a big drum there. And all of this was being bombarded in a liquid, and then being filled. And on this film, it had traces of tracks of bubbles, not bigger than the top of a stick pen. And we had to identify the atoms and all of the electrodes and everything that went with it. And I can remember at the University of Maryland, and I can't find my notebook that I kept, we were the high energy physics scales, who discovered particles that weren't even named yet. So the university was known for that and I worked there, Pearl Lee Campbell, Ethel Lockerman Dory, and Lucille Sharps. And we were the counterparts, you know, out of Lakeland."
